WebNov 17, 2005 · I agree with offroader_dodge; most of the "clunk" is caused by the backlash between pinion and gear in the rear axle. Mine was set at twice the maximum allowed by the factory (but was set as such at the factory). I must also agree that when the driveshaft splines collected enough play, this clunk will increase as well. WebAug 26, 2024 · Those "clunks" can sometimes be a loose end link nut. If they're not really tight, they'll make a clunk every time the suspension loads/unloads. I prefer to drive my Challenger, fast, like breaking the speed limits everywhere I go, all the while spewing toxic exhaust fumes. This is somewhat normal -these transmissions are heavy duty, transmit a lot of torque to the rear diff. In traffic, and or shifting at lower speeds, can be a bit clunky. However, shifting fast and at higher speeds, should be pretty smooth.

The tie rod ends needing replacing, but it was the sway bar end link that was making the noise. On our car, these parts were worn out at less than 40,000 miles.
